Department of Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering:

Metallurgy is a domain of materials science and materials engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their intermetallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are called alloys. Metallurgy is also the technology of metals: the way in which science is applied to the production of metals, and the engineering of metal components for use in products for consumers and manufacturers. The production of metals involves the processing of ores to extract the metal they contain, and the mixture of metals, sometimes with other elements, to produce alloys. Metallurgy is distinguished from the craft of metalworking.

Metallurgy is subdivided into ferrous metallurgy (sometimes also known as black metallurgy) and non-ferrous metallurgy or colored metallurgy. Ferrous metallurgy involves processes and alloys based on iron while non-ferrous metallurgy involves processes and alloys based on other metals. The production of ferrous metals accounts for 95 percent of world metal production.

Scope of Metallurgy in India

Metallurgical jobs are among the most demanding and highly paid job in India. Metal extractors like Tata Steel, Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Hindustan Copper Limited, Hindalco Industries Limited, and Jindal Steel are the major recruiters of metallurgical consultants. Among the electrical industries, Finolex Cables Limited and Cable Corporation of India are the leading employers of metallurgy scholars.

Scope outside India

Overseas, students after successfully completing metallurgy courses in India are offered placements as metallurgical technicians, metallurgical engineers, and process analysts. Organizations in metal extraction industry, alloy manufacturing plants, and heavy machinery units appoint qualified metallurgical professionals.

Job Prospects for Metallurgical Engineers

Metallurgists are employed in foundries, heat treatment shops, rolling mills, etc. industries. They are also employed in research laboratories, industries and plants extracting and processing metals like iron and steel, nickel, tin, copper, zinc, aluminium and brass etc. Tata Iron and Steel and other companies also employ them. A fresh metallurgical engineer can be offer a very good salary package.
